Muggletonians and the Continuation of the Geocentric Model
The Age of Reason

London, February 3, 1651, John Reeve received a commission from God, requesting him to be the “last messenger for a great work,” and was given “Lodowick Muggleton to be thy mouth.” The resulting Protestant Christian movement became known as Muggletonianism. The group opposed philosophical reason, and rather than teach the existing Natural Sciences, they created their own universal system based on a very literal scriptural interpretation. The celestial charts in this exhibition were created by Isaac Frost, a prominent nineteenth century member of the sect, who attempted to reject Newtonian physics in favor of his preferred geocentric model.

System According to the Holy Scriptures

The sun orbits the Earth in Frost’s geocentric model.

Frost gives us a closer look at his geocentric theory. The sun and moon orbit the Earth, changing from day to night.

Another large view of the Earth, this model labels North and South, as well as the Six Gates of Birth and Death.

The Newtonian System

Frost presents the opposing Newtonian System.

This print shows the universe as a group of independent solar systems in varying sizes, thus attempting to expose the Newtonian System as an absurd theory.

“This Diagram will show that if the Earth revolves round the Sun, as the Solar System states, then it will necessarily follow, that the Earth will differ in its position with the sun and any given fixed star on its equator, every day throughout the year. Now consider, is it so? If it is not so, then it will make much in favor of the Holy Scriptures, that the Sun revolves round the Earth.”
